Education Management Software: the development of uses has intensified since the first lockdown

The report by the Digital Department of the French Ministry of National Education of November 2020 entitled “Les EMS Face à la crise sanitaire 2020” (EMS confronted with the 2020 health crisis) highlights the increased use of EMS (Education Management Software) by the educational community since the lockdown. During the first lockdown, EMS have been indispensable for providing remote teaching. Since the end of this period, the rise in use has continued even with the return to face-to-face classes: the figures for the start of the school year in 2020 attest to the increase in frequentation and use compared to those for 2019.

Education Management Software: the cornerstone of teaching continuity

 
As of the closing of the teaching establishments, the EMS systems allowed them to maintain the links between members of the educational community. More than 550 million visits have been counted for the EMS systems during the lockdown period*
 
During the lockdown, the use of teaching services increased by 226%. In particular, videoconference services, data storage and sharing services (+530% during the lockdown), learning paths (+700% during the lockdown) and collaborative work have been used the most to maintain teaching continuity.

In addition, the EMS systems have seen an exponential growth in visits (+345%) and have entered the “top 5” of the most consulted websites in France. Visits to EMS are like those of the major national websites in May 2020 according to the ACPM ranking. In May 2020, the total number of visits to EMS was 186 million. However, over this period, the 2nd most visited national website (the Le Figaro website) had 171 million visits.


Continuation of the growth in visits and use of digital spaces after the lockdown

At the start of the school year in 2020, visits to the EMS on the first day back doubled (+102% compared with 2019).

In addition, the uses that were developed during the lockdown, especially teaching services, continued to grow at the start of the school year 2020. Compared to the start of the school year in 2019, the EMS counted +50% visits over the first 4 weeks of September 2020, +26% of which to schooling, + 51% to teaching services, +34,000 videoconferences (a service almost inexistant at the start of the school year in 2019) and +61% on learning pathways.*

In these exceptional circumstances, digital services in education have proven their utility, contributing to ensuring teaching continuity. Moreover, this unprecedented situation has allowed some users to discover these digital solutions. The services offered have convinced them: the statistics show an increase in uses, in particular for teaching services.

 
To conclude, the generalization of the national system for EMS audience measurement is essential for having a clear image, at a given moment, of visits to and uses of, all the EMS within the regions.
