Digital certification is an important step in the digital transformation of higher education and its ecosystem. To offer its customers ever more innovative solutions, Kosmos, a member of the EdTech network, supports innovative startups in the education sector.

In 2019, Kosmos has chosen to support BCDiploma, a startup launched in 2017 by Luc Jarry-Lacombe and Vincent Langard. Through this partnership, Kosmos aims to offer its customers a new service for certifying diplomas using blockchain technology.

Falsified diplomas are a reality

In 2017, according to the French Ministry of Education, Teaching and Research, 30% of CVs sent to recruitment agencies mentioned diplomas in an abusive or inaccurate way. Today, it's easy to falsify a Graduate's diploma. Until very recently, to guarantee the veracity of diplomas obtained, it was necessary to request a certified copy from the issuer. Blockchain technology now makes it possible to offer a solution for guaranteeing the authenticity of a Graduate's diploma without a tedious process.

What is blockchain?

Blockchain is a technology that emerged in 2008 with the Bitcoin digital currency. It was introduced by an unknown man using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

A blockchain is a database containing the history of all exchanges between its users since its creation. This database is secure and distributed: it is shared by its various users, without intermediaries, enabling each one to confirm the validity of the chain.

Its innovation lies in the fact that this solution operates without a central control body, thus preventing piracy. Each user can use a cryptographic system to check the validity of information, add data and record a transaction at any time.
There are public blockchains, open to all, and private blockchains, whose access and use are restricted to a certain number of players.

Blockchain is an incorruptible digital register of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not only financial transactions, but potentially anything of value.

Moreover, blockchain is now a technology that has also found its way into the world of education.
